Environment
The Company has implemented stringent occupational health and safety protocols since the first production days in 2006. As a result, the Company has achieved safety performance results equivalent to some of the world’s best operations.
At the same time, Societe Minieres de Tanganyika Sprl has developed comprehensive health programs to support a fit-for-work philosophy applying equally to homes and work places.
Detailed environmental management programs have been incorporated into all aspects of Societe Minieres de Tanganyika Sprl activities. The Company’s goal is the implementation of international best practice based on World Bank guidelines, DRC Mining code regulations and global industry codes.
Not one significant environmental infraction or incident was reported during the year; a reflection of prevention strategies for work practices and ongoing employee and contractor training. Environmental management systems are monitored on an annual basis by the Health, Safety and Environmental Manager and an environmental team made up exclusively of local Congolese staff.
Transparency
As part of its commitment to transparency and accountability, Societe Minieres de Tanganyika Sprl has welcomed external review of the Company’s operations. This includes a 2010 report by Global Witness and VSV, based on EIDCM Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. The review indicates that in 2008 the Company was 48,7% compliant on the set of 21 parameters selected by Global Witness and VSV. EIDCM Audit on Societe Minieres de Tanganyika Sprl – August 2008. A second report is scheduled in the second half of 2011.
Looking forward, Societe Minieres de Tanganyika Sprl is working on the implementation of a comprehensive Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR) program throughout the Company, and on the continued support for the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (“EITI”), both of which are key to the successful growth of the DRC.
